The project was centred around themes of youth activism and using your voice to make a change.
Al painting the landscape
The characters are taken from drawings made in our chalk workshops, and each has speech bubbles/banners/placards in blackboard paint so the kids can interact with the walls and add their own messages, allowing their activism to evolve over time.
In September 2021 Liv Wright (@bloomingreat), Al Leys (alistair.leys) and Amy Dolan (adolanart_) created a mural project on a war structure in Pymmes Park, Edmonton. The painting plays with the intersections, found in cities, where nature and built environments coexist. Mirroring its environment, the building also addresses the notions of visibility, the quiet stories, moments and spaces of reflection in a city.
The group wanted to bring colour and beauty to this previously tired, white and flaking building. WW2 civil defence centre.
the focus group grew interested in dazzle ships. These decorated vessels, with their intense combinations of shapes and colour, appear invisible on a horizon line. The design team used photographs and stories of the park and surrounding cityscapes. These were simplified into basic patterns which were overlaid in different combinations.
A local passerby who dropped in to help paint - 30 volunteers worked on the mural across a two week painting period.
The piece was painted in September 2021 with a wonderful group of volunteers from Edmonton.
